Overview of Wireless Communication

Wireless communication is a burgeoning field, touching a wide range of engineering disciplines including aspects of control theory, software engineering and machine learning. This course provides a solid background in wireless communication theory. It has the dual aims of introducing students to wireless communication theory, and exposing students to current and emerging trends in wireless technology. This course is aimed at non-specialists who are interested in wireless aspects is ICT.

This course exposes students to current research and open problems in Wireless Communications. The course covers basic communication channel theory, providing background in modulation, coding and information theory. This theory is  then applied to current leading-edge research topics, including multiuser and multi-access channels, multiple antenna channels and mobile networking. The course concludes with an examination of emerging wireless technologies such as Home-RF and Bluetooth.

Continuous Wireless Communication

This course exposes students to the application of operators and Hilbert Space techniques to communication systems. The abstract operator viewpoint is used to address fundamental questions such as dimensionality, and optimal multiple-input multiple-output wireless channel configurations. The course covers numerical modelling of communication channels, and concludes with an introduction to information theory from the viewpoint of operator channels.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems are an active research topic around the world. Yet MIMO wireless systems may be considered as a specific example of a much broader class of communication systems. Famous results for MIMO wireless systems are presented and used to motivate an abstract view of communication systems. This broader class allows us to address fundamental limits for communication between locations. This course will expose students to a new and exciting research area developing here in RSISE. For exceptional students there are possibilities of publications arising as a result of their course-work.

This course is intended as an advanced course, and thus it is expected that students will have a good understanding of signal processing, and communications theory, and a mild understanding of information theory.
