HCSNet Workshop on the Use of Vision in HCI - VisHCI 2006

ANU, Canberra, 1-3 November 2006

In cooperation with RSISE, NICTA Canberra and Seeing Machines

Paper Submission

The submission of full papers and extended abstracts is now closed. Thank you to all those who submitted to VisHCI 2006! The quality of the submissions we received was very good. Please check the program for a list of accepted papers.

Accepted full papers and extended abstracts will be published in the workshop proceedings via the Australian Computer Society's series Conferences in Research and Practice in Information Technology (CRPIT), volume 56, ISBN 1-920-68238-4, ISSN 1445-1336. Papers published in the CRPIT series will also be sent to the usual digital libraries, will be available in the usual citation indices (e.g. Citeseer, Google Scholar, DBLP) and will also be available freely online on the CRPIT website.

It is important that submitted papers (full papers and extended abstracts) adhere to the CRPIT style guide, as papers otherwise cannot be included in the workshop proceedings. Please note that it is also a condition of publication that accepted papers will be presented by one of the authors.

Full Papers v. Extended Abstracts
There are two main differences between full paper and extended abstract submissions. First, full papers are reviewed by at least two members of the program committee, while extended abstracts are not peer-reviewed at all. The decision of acceptance of extended abstracts rests with the workshop organisers. Secondly, full papers can be up to 10 pages long, while extended abstracts should be about 500-1000 words long and under no circumstances be longer than 2 pages.

Formatting Details
Here are the most important formatting details. For specific instructions, check the CRPIT style guide and have a look at the example. The easiest way to adhere to the required style is by using the templates provided below.

  • Full papers can have a maximum length of 10 pages. Extended abstracts are should be about 500-1000 words long, but under no circumstance longer than 2 pages. No extra pages are available. Papers exceeding the page limit will not be considered.
  • Papers must be written in English and submitted in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. Full papers should be written in an anonymous fashion for a blind paper review, i.e. remove author names and affiliations when submitting your paper for review. Extended abstracts should have author names and affiliations included, as they will not be peer-reviewed, so any submitted extended abstracts must be in camera-ready form.
  • The abstract should clearly identify the content of the paper and should have no more than 250 words. Please give a maximum of 3 keywords below the abstract.
  • Normal text is 10 point Times Roman in two columns, single line spacing. Page size is A4 with 0.8in borders on all sides and a margin of 0.2in between the two columns.
  • There should be no blank line between paragraphs. Headings below level 3 should be avoided. Tables and figures should be confined to one column but where this is not possible should be located at the top of a page. A caption using the caption style should be provided below the table or figure.
  • Citations are to be in the author-date format only, e.g. Goecke (2006); Robles-Kelly & Goecke (2006); Caelli, Goecke & Robles-Kelly (2006); Caelli et al. (2006).
We strongly suggest that you use the following style files provided for your convenience. We urge prospective authors to use Latex and the Latex style files and examples provided below, as that is the easiest way to ensure that your paper adheres to the style guidelines. However, if you must use Microsoft Word, please use the template file provided below.

LaTeX
Workshop paper template (.tex)
Workshop paper example (.pdf)
CRPIT Latex style file (CRPITStyle.cls)
AGSM Bibtex style file (agsm.bst)
Harvard reference style file (harvard.sty)
Example figure (exampleFigure.eps), in case you want to compile the Latex example file

For those who prefer using LyX to write their LaTeX documents, David Dean has kindly produced a webpage explaining how to use LyX to write a paper in the CRPIT style.

Microsoft Word
Workshop paper template (.rtf)
Microsoft Word being as it is, in our experience, it is easiest to use this file and edit the various sections, rather than trying to copy the styles over to a new, blank document.

For more information, you can also check the CRPIT Procedures and Resources for Authors webpage.

Papers must be submitted electronically through the VisHCI 2006 online paper submission system. Do not send them to CRPIT directly! Please remove author names and affiliations in full paper submissions for the blind review, but leave them included for abstract submissions as these have to be in a camera-ready format.

Camera-ready Papers

Please make sure that your camera-ready papers include the following footnote on page 1 (as in the example files):

Copyright ©2006, Australian Computer Society, Inc. This paper appeared at HCSNet Workshop on the Use of Vision in HCI (VisHCI 2006), Canberra, Australia. Conferences in Research and Practice in Information Technology (CRPIT), Vol. 56. R. Goecke, A. Robles-Kelly & T. Caelli, Eds. Reproduction for academic, not-for profit purposes permitted provided this text is included.

Without this footnote, your paper cannot be published. The easiest way to include it is by using the template files provided.

Copyright Transfer Form for Camera-ready Papers

Please note that final, accepted full papers as well as the extended abstracts can only be published if an Acceptance and Copyright Transfer Form has been signed by the principal author. Do not send this form in when submitting a paper for peer review! Only once your paper / extended abstract has been accepted for publication and you submit the camera-ready version, fax the signed form to the fax number shown at the top of the form (+61 8 8201 2904, Attention: John Roddick).

However, if you worry about such copyright transfers, we suggest that you check out the form before submitting a paper or extended abstract in the first place.
