Transformers

 

Transformers are important examples of two port networks. Transformers, of course, find wide application in electrical engineering, and a key component of the electric supply system. Figure 62 shows the transformer symbol, with current and voltage sign conventions.

N1 and N2 are the numbers of turns in the left and right coils, respectively.
L1 and L2 are the self inductances   of the two coils.
M is the mutual inductance   of the coils (due to common flux linkage).
The position of the dots indicates that the fluxes in the two coils are assisting each other. If one of the dots was moved to the bottom, then the fluxes oppose.
