Ideal Model

  We have seen that the diode behaves essentially as a switch: on when forward biased, off when reverse biased. The ideal diode characteristic is shown in Figure 73. Corresponding to this is the ideal diode model, Figure 74.

When the diode is reverse biased, we replace it with an open switch, and when the diode is forward biased, we use a closed switch.
