Other Types of Diodes

When the reverse voltage applied to a diode is large enough, the diode breaks down and a large current can flow, Figure 90. The voltage at which this occurs is called the Zener voltage VZ. Zener diodes are designed to exploit this breakdown behaviour, and find application in circuits which require a precise voltage to be maintained, such as in power supplies.
