Register-Transfer Logic (RTL) Systems

The methods of state machine design we have learned so far are appropriate for relatively simple designs. In this chapter we briefly look at techniques suitable for larger scale designs. Such techniques involve register-transfer level (RTL) systems, with distinct data and control subsystems, and also microprogrammed controllers.

RTL systems are described in Chapters 13 and 14 of the book ELM (see References, Chapter 11).

These ideas will help to tie together the two main themes of this course: (i) hardware design via state machines, and (ii) software design for microprocessors.
