The ability of humans to perceive the spatial location of a sound is of great practical and research importance. The recent advances in computational power and acoustic measurement techniques have make the study of the HRTF a rapidly growing area with potential uses in virtual reality audio applications. This research will focus on applying binaural techniques in communication systems, for situations where the listener must hear more than one communication channel at a time. Implementations of this kind communication system can be used for pilots, air control towers and spatial audio teleconferencing.

The objectives of this research are to study those areas of binaural acoustics so that communication tasks related to the sound localization, separation and spatialization can be solved. The emphasis is to record and model acoustic cues, the head-related-transfer-function (HRTF), resolved by the auditory system to localize sounds and to separate concurrent sounds. It is expected that this research will make the following main contributions to binaural techniques: 1) Develop an efficient HRTF measurement apparatus for human subjects, which are applicable to practical applications. 2) A parametric HRTF model that are simple and accurate and being capable of adapting to different listeners by a simple change of parameters. 3) Design new methods to separate the sound sources with only two sensors based on the HRTF knowledge.
