Ref: XXXXXX – NOTE THIS POSITION IS
NOT YET OFFICIALLY ADVERTISED.
THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY –
RESEARCH SCHOOL OF INFORMATION SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING.
Department
of Systems Engineering and Department of Computer
Science
We seek to fill one
post-doctoral position in the area of Computer Vision and Machine Learning to
work with Professor Richard Hartley and Dr. Alex Smola. The project will involve applying
Machine Learning techniques, and in particular kernel methods, to problems in
Computer Vision such as object recognition object categorization, and image
localization with respect to an image data-base (for instance, where in
Canberra was this image taken?).
The research is funded by
the Australian Research Council for three years, and will be carried out in
close collaboration with the European Union’s LAVA project. The goals of LAVA are similarly to
apply Machine Learning techniques to Vision problems. The LAVA partners that we will be most closely working with
are at INRIA – Grenoble and Royal Holloway Institute, UK. The successful candidate will be
expected to visit these institutions for periods to assist in coordinating this
research.
The Research School of Information Sciences and Engineering is part of the Institute of Advanced Studies at the Australian National University. It consists of three departments involved in research and post-graduate education. This project is associated with the Computer Vision group of the Department of Systems Engineering (http://www.syseng.anu.edu.au) and the Machine Learning group in the Department of Computer Science (http://discus.anu.edu.au).
RSISE is also closely associated with National ICT Australia (NICTA) (http://nicta.com.au) and the successful candidate will have the option of being seconded to NICTA.
Remuneration: Remuneration will be in the ANU Level B range of $XXXX to $XXXX. However any employee seconded to NICTA will be offered a salary top-up to competitive international levels.
