Anoop Cherian

I am a Senior Principal Research Scientist at Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs (MERL), Cambridge, MA and an Adjunct Senior Lecturer with the Australian National University, Canberra.

From 2014-2017, I was a Research Fellow at the Australian National University, working with Prof. Stephen Gould and Prof. Richard Hartley. Before that (2012-2014), I was a postdoctoral researcher at Inria (Grenoble) with Dr. Cordelia Schmid and Dr. Julien Mairal. I also collaborate with Prof. Suvrit Sra and Prof. Josh Tenenbaum at MIT.

I did my PhD (2013) at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA under Prof. Nikolaos Papanikolopoulos.  Prior to that I was a software design engineer at Microsoft. I received my undergraduate (honors) degree in computer science and engineering at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Calicut, India in 2002.

I have broad interests in machine learning, including computer vision, language modeling, and robotics. A few big problems of current research interests are:

·         Large Language Models and Cognition

·         Multimodal Embodied Intelligence

·         Neuro-Symbolic Reasoning and Scene Graphs

·         Generative/Diffusion Models for Image/Video Synthesis

·         Contrastive/Self-supervised Learning

·         Non-convex/Riemannian Optimization on Matrix Manifolds

My approaches usually use deep learning, geometric optimization, graph neural networks, and generative methods. Please see the publications list below.
