I think it's not quite just that the present-day distribution of incomes and wealth in Australia  (below left) doesn't look more like the distribution of chest circumferences in Scottish soldiers in 1817 (below right).


Australian income and wealth distribution

Chest circumferences of 5,732 Scottish soldiers in 1817, measured by Belgian mathematician Mr A Quetelet.  This shape can be seen everywhere in the natural world - from Scottish chest sizes to the temperature at which popcorn pops. It's known as a normal or 'Gaussian' distribution.
