The Role of Axioms in Mathematics

It is often assumed unreflectively that axioms in mathematics are used
to
provide fundamental truths that are easily recognized from which all
mathematical claims can then be developed. I will argue that they
do no
such thing, but instead allow people with radically different
philosophical views about mathematics to work productively together.
