Introduction

I am a Principal Researcher at the Statistical Machine Learning program, National ICT Australia with an adjunct appointment at the Research School for Information Sciences and Engineering (RSISE), Australian National University. I got my Ph.D in 1978 from the Warsaw University of Technology in Mathematics.

Research

My research focusses on Machine Learning and its applications to real life problems, especially Bioinformatics. I am especially interested in learning in very high dimensional spaces from small size datasets. In particular I am fascinated by the phenomenon of anti-learning, when data forces supervised learning algorithms to generate compulsive 'liar' predictors. By this I mean classifiers which are perfect on the training set but systematically worse than random guessing on an independent test set.

Open Positions

I currently have opened two postdoc positions, Level B and Level B/C, and a Ph.D position in the Cancer Genomics project. Please send me a mail if you are interested in the position.
